Pedernales Falls State Park
Subnational Park · Johnson City, Texas
Five thousand acres of Hill Country limestone thirty miles west of Austin, where the Pedernales River drops about fifty feet over three thousand feet of tilted three-hundred-million-year-old rock slabs. It draws over two hundred thousand visitors a year for the falls, the swimming downstream, twenty miles of technical mountain biking and skies dark enough to show the Milky Way. It also sits in Flash Flood Alley, and the river here can rise several feet in minutes under a clear sky.
