Pedra Azul
Pedra Azul State Park, A Granite Monolith In The Mountains Of EspíRito Santo Whose Colour Shifts With The Light, With A Lizard Shaped Outcrop And Natural Pools · Domingos Martins, Espírito Santo
Pedra Azul is a huge granite dome in the mountains of Espírito Santo, its summit roughly 1,800 m above sea level (confirm the exact figure), protected since 1991 as a state park. The name means blue stone: lichens and the angle of the light make the bare rock shift from grey to blue or green through the day. On one face a smaller outcrop looks like a lizard climbing the rock, which gives the scenic road below its name, the Rota do Lagarto. The park has short trails through Atlantic forest and a guided walk up to natural pools on the rock's flank, with limited daily places (confirm how to book). Most visitors come for the whole area rather than the park alone: inns with fireplaces, trout and fondue restaurants, strawberry and coffee farms, and the German and Italian immigrant towns of Domingos Martins and Venda Nova do Imigrante. It is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Vitória, the capital's winter weekend escape, and nights can be cold. Worth it if you are in the state; few people cross Brazil for it.
Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul, Rota do Lagarto, Domingos Martins, ES, Domingos Martins, Espírito Santo, Brazil
The state park opens in daytime only, on set days of the week, and is often closed one weekday for maintenance; confirm current days and hours with the park or the state environment institute before driving up. The trail to the natural pools is guided and limited to a set number of people per day, and places at weekends and on holidays go early, so book or ask about the booking system in advance; the pools trail may close after heavy rain because the rock becomes dangerously slippery. The inns, restaurants and farm shops along the Rota do Lagarto keep their own hours, and many open fully only from Thursday or Friday to Sunday, with some closed early in the week outside the holidays. The busy season is the cool, dry winter from roughly May to August, when Vitória and Minas families fill the inns and prices rise, and especially during winter festivals in Domingos Martins and around Venda Nova. Summer from roughly December to March is greener and quieter but brings afternoon storms and mist that can hide the rock for hours.
