Pelion
Mythical Mountain Of The Centaurs: Stone Roofed Villages In Chestnut And Plane Forest, Cobbled Kalderimi Paths Down To Aegean Beaches, And A Small Ski Centre · Makrinitsa, Thessaly
Pelion is the mountain peninsula that curls around the Pagasetic Gulf above the port city of Volos, halfway between Athens and Thessaloniki. In myth it was the home of the Centaurs, where the wise Chiron taught Achilles and Jason; today it is a green, steep, forested ridge rising to about 1,600 m, covered in chestnut, beech, plane and apple trees, with some two dozen stone villages of slate roofs, tall mansions and plane-shaded squares. Old cobbled mule paths, the kalderimia, link the villages to each other and down to the sea. The Aegean side (Tsagarada, Zagora, Kissos) drops to white-pebble coves such as Mylopotamos and Fakistra; the calmer gulf side (Milies, Afissos, Kala Nera) has gentle water and a heritage mountain railway. It is one of the few Greek places that works in every season: beaches in summer, chestnuts and colour in autumn, fireplaces and a small ski centre in winter. It suits walkers, drivers and slow travellers. Honest caveats: the roads are narrow hairpins and distances take far longer than the map suggests, and Storm Daniel in 2023 left flood and road damage.

Pelion is a region, not a ticketed site: villages, squares, paths and beaches are open at all hours and free. Churches in the villages usually open for services and at irregular hours in daytime. The heritage little train from Ano Lechonia to Milies has historically run on summer days and at weekends in spring and autumn, but its 2026 timetable is not confirmed - confirm it is running before you plan a day around it. The Agriolefkes ski centre near the Hania pass opens roughly late December to March when there is snow. Getting there: drive or take the KTEL bus to Volos (roughly 4 hours from Athens, 2 from Thessaloniki), then local buses or, far better, a car. Book village guesthouses ahead for August, Easter, Christmas and ski weekends.
