Pemaquid Point Light
Lighthouse · Bristol, Maine
A lighthouse commissioned in 1827 by President John Quincy Adams on a point of extraordinary rock - Silurian sediment laid down 430 million years ago, cooked into gneiss and then intruded by molten rock, weathered into the striated grey slabs that run from the tower straight down into the Atlantic. Maine put it on the state quarter by popular vote. The rock is why people come.

THE PARK IS SEASONAL, generally mid-May to mid-October, with a small admission to the grounds. ⚠ THE TOWER OPENS ONLY WHEN VOLUNTEERS ARE AVAILABLE and climbs are not guaranteed on any given day - the museum in the keepers' house keeps its own seasonal hours. Out of season the gate is open and the rocks are free to walk, which many people prefer. It is run by the town of Bristol rather than the state.
