Pembina State Museum
History Museum · Pembina, North Dakota
A museum in the far north-east corner of North Dakota, a mile from both the Manitoba border and the Minnesota line, with a seven-storey observation tower attached. Pembina is the oldest European settlement in the state, a fur-trade and Metis community established around 1797, and the museum covers the region from the Cretaceous seabed through the Metis buffalo hunts to modern agriculture. The tower gives an eighty-foot view over the Red River valley, which from up there is visibly the flat bed of a vanished glacial lake.
805 State Highway 59, Pembina, North Dakota, 58271, United States
Generally open daily in the summer season, roughly 9 AM to 5 PM, with a modest admission that includes the observation tower and free parking. ⚠ HOURS AND DAYS ARE REDUCED OUTSIDE SUMMER and the museum is closed on some winter days - ring before travelling, because Pembina is a long way north and there is very little else open. The site is run by the State Historical Society of North Dakota; its Bismarck head office number appears alongside the museum's own, and the Pembina number is the one to ring.
