Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (1952), The Only Mainly Coastal National Park In The UK, With The 300 Km Pembrokeshire Coast Path, Seal And Seabird Colonies On Skomer And Ramsey, And St Davids Cathedral. · St Davids, Wales

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, created in 1952, is the only mainly coastal national park in the UK. It stretches along about 300 km of cliffs, coves, beaches and offshore islands in south-west Wales, and is walked end to end by the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. The cathedral city of St Davids, the smallest in Britain, sits near the western tip. The big draws are seabirds and seals: puffins on Skomer from roughly April to July, grey seal pups in autumn, gannets on Grassholm and dolphins from boat trips. It suits walkers, families, birders and anyone who likes wild coast. Be honest about the limits: landing on Skomer is capped each day, boats cancel in swells, the best beaches fill in August, and a car is almost essential away from the Strumble Shuttle and Poppit Rocket bus lines. Wind, rain and sea fog are normal. Allow three days for a proper taste, a week for a section walk, and book boats and beds early.

The coast and path are open all year with no gates, so you can walk at any hour, but the paths are unlit and cliff edges are dangerous in the dark. Boat trips to Skomer, Ramsey and Grassholm run roughly from April to October and depend on the sea state, with cancellations common in wind. Skomer landings usually close for the winter and some days of the week; confirm days and sailing times with the operator. Visitor centres in St Davids and Tenby keep seasonal hours, shorter from November to March. Beach car parks are open daily and many charge by the day in summer. St Davids Cathedral is open daily but closes for services and events, so confirm before travelling. Check tide tables before beach and cove walks, because some sections are impassable at high tide.
