Pennsylvania Dutch Country

Heritage District · Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania

The farmland east of Lancaster where the oldest Amish settlement in North America has been worked since the 1730s, and the one most Americans picture when they hear the word. There is no gate, no centre and nothing to buy a ticket for: it is a working agricultural landscape of small dairy farms, horse-drawn buggies using the roads as ordinary traffic, and villages with names like Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse and Paradise. Ohio's Holmes County settlement is larger, but this is the one with the reputation, and it carries the visitor numbers to match.

Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, 17505, United States

The landscape is public road and is open at all times, free. Amish-run businesses, roadside stands and farm shops are CLOSED ON SUNDAY. Commercial attractions and villages generally keep daytime hours Monday to Saturday, with reduced winter schedules. Lancaster Central Market runs Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings.
