Pescadero State Beach
State Park · Pescadero, California
Pescadero State Beach lies on the San Mateo County coast beside Highway 1, near the small town of Pescadero. It is a wide, wind-shaped beach backed by low bluffs, with rocky tide pools and rock formations along the shore and a pebble-covered stretch in places - confirm which section. Across the road is the Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve, a wetland known for birds, including great blue herons - confirm - and a quiet stop for anyone who likes watching wildlife. Fog and wind are the rule here even in summer, the water is cold and the waves and rip currents are dangerous, so this is a beach for walking and looking, not for swimming. Lifeguards are not normally on duty - confirm. Pigeon Point Light Station is a separate place a short drive south. The park suits birders, photographers and families who want a wild stretch of coast with a picnic, and it is a poor pick for a warm sunbathing day.

California State Parks has generally run Pescadero State Beach as a day-use area from around morning until sunset, with several roadside parking areas along Highway 1 rather than one gate - confirm which are open, whether a pay machine collects the day-use fee and when the marsh across the road is open to walkers. Morning fog often lasts into the afternoon in summer, and winter storms bring heavy surf, flooded marsh paths and sometimes closures along the coast road. Nesting seasons for birds and seal or seabird protections may close parts of the shore or marsh at certain times of year. Check the State Parks page and local road alerts on the day before you go.
