Petersburg National Battlefield
Battlefield · Petersburg, Virginia
The ground of the nine-and-a-half-month siege that actually ended the Civil War. Grant could not take Petersburg by assault in June 1864, so he sat down in front of it and cut its railways one at a time; when the line finally broke in April 1865, Richmond fell the next day and Lee surrendered a week later. The park holds the Crater, the surviving forts and earthworks, and Grant's headquarters at City Point downriver.
