Petrified Forest National Park

National Park · Petrified Forest, Arizona

A park in north-east Arizona where logs of trees about 218 million years old lie turned to quartz across the badlands, alongside the pastel hills of the Painted Desert. A 28-mile road runs through it from Interstate 40 to US 180, past the Painted Desert Inn, the petroglyphs of Newspaper Rock and Puerco Pueblo, the Blue Mesa badlands and the Crystal Forest and Giant Logs trails. It is the only national park with a section of Route 66 inside it. Taking even a small piece of petrified wood is illegal. Leashed dogs are welcome on its trails, and the Painted Desert Wilderness offers free backcountry camping by permit.
