The Tallest Buildings In The World From 1998 To 2004 And Still The Tallest Twin Towers Anywhere, With A Skybridge That Is Deliberately Not Bolted Rigidly To Either Tower · Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur
FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY-TWO METRES, FINISHED IN 1998, AND THE TALLEST BUILDINGS IN THE WORLD UNTIL TAIPEI TOOK THE TITLE IN 2004 - and still, a quarter of a century on, THE TALLEST TWIN TOWERS ANYWHERE. Cesar Pelli's floor plan is not an arbitrary shape: IT IS AN EIGHT-POINTED STAR MADE OF TWO INTERLOCKING SQUARES, an Islamic geometric figure, with circular sections filled in to gain floor area. THE BEST DETAIL IS THE SKYBRIDGE. It links the towers at levels forty-one and forty-two, and IT IS NOT RIGIDLY BOLTED TO EITHER OF THEM - the towers sway independently in the wind, so the bridge SLIDES in and out of its supports. The two towers were built by TWO DIFFERENT CONSORTIA, one Japanese-led and one Korean-led, IN OPEN COMPETITION - and the one that started late caught up. Deck tickets are capped daily and sell out. Book a late-afternoon slot and stay for blue hour, photograph them from KLCC Park rather than the base, and check the weekly maintenance closure before you commit.
Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
THE OBSERVATION EXPERIENCE COVERS THE SKYBRIDGE AT LEVEL FORTY-ONE AND THE DECK AT LEVEL EIGHTY-SIX, on a TIMED-ENTRY TICKET. DAILY NUMBERS ARE CAPPED AND TICKETS REGULARLY SELL OUT - book online in advance rather than queueing on the day, and expect the good slots to go first. THE TOWERS CLOSE ONE DAY A WEEK for maintenance, typically Monday, and during FRIDAY PRAYERS there is a midday break. THE OFFICE FLOORS ARE NOT PUBLIC. SURIA KLCC, the mall in the podium, and KLCC PARK behind it are open and free, and the park's FOUNTAIN SHOW runs in the evening. THE CLASSIC PHOTOGRAPH IS FROM KLCC PARK OR FROM THE ROOFTOP BARS opposite, not from the base - stand underneath and you cannot fit them in. Best at blue hour, when the lights come on.
