Phaistos

Minoan Palace Above The Messara Plain, Find Spot Of The Phaistos Disc; Part Of The UNESCO Minoan Palatial Centres Inscription (2025) · Moires, Crete

Phaistos is the second great Minoan palace of Crete, set on a ridge above the wide Messara plain in the south of the island, with Mount Ida (Psiloritis) filling the view to the north. The first palace rose around 1900 BC, was destroyed by earthquake and rebuilt, and the town around it was one of the major centres of Bronze Age Crete. Italian archaeologists excavated it from 1900, and in 1908 they found the Phaistos Disc, the clay disc stamped with a spiral of undeciphered signs that is now in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Since 2025 Phaistos has been part of the UNESCO Minoan Palatial Centres listing with Knossos, Malia, Zakros, Zominthos and Kydonia. Unlike Knossos, nothing here has been rebuilt in concrete: you see the honest ruin, a monumental stairway, paved courts and storerooms, in a setting that many find the most beautiful of any Minoan site. It suits visitors who like quiet ruins and landscape. Honest caveats: without reconstruction it is harder to read, shade is scarce, and it is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Heraklion.
