Philadelphia Museum of Art
Art Museum · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
One of the largest art museums in the United States, founded out of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition and housed since 1928 in a honey-coloured Greek Revival building set at the head of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Its collection runs from medieval Europe to contemporary American work and includes the largest holding of Marcel Duchamp anywhere, along with a set of complete architectural period rooms — a Japanese teahouse, an Indian temple hall, a Chinese palace hall — reassembled inside the galleries. The seventy-two steps at its east entrance are the ones Sylvester Stallone ran up in 1976, which is why a great many visitors arrive knowing the staircase and nothing about the collection.
