Philadelphia's Magic Gardens
Specialty Museum · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Half a block of South Street covered, inside and out, in mosaic made from broken mirror, bottles, bicycle wheels, tiles and folk art by Isaiah Zagar, who started on the vacant lot next to his studio in 1994 and did not stop for fourteen years. When the absentee landowner tried to sell in 2002 Zagar and the neighbourhood fought it and the site became a non-profit. It is an indoor gallery, a half-underground labyrinth and an outdoor sculpture garden, and it is the densest single thing to look at anywhere in Philadelphia.
1020 South Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19147, United States
Open most days, generally late morning to late afternoon, with at least one closed weekday — verify before travelling. Timed tickets booked online; weekend slots sell out days ahead in summer. Largely an outdoor site. Guided neighbourhood mural walks run on a limited separate schedule.
