Philadelphia Zoo
Zoo · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The first zoo in the United States, chartered in 1859 and opened on 1 July 1874 after the Civil War delayed it, on forty-two acres of Fairmount Park behind a pair of Frank Furness gatehouses that still stand. It is small by modern standards and has responded by building upward: Zoo360 is a network of see-through mesh trails running over paths and between buildings, so that big cats, primates and bears travel above the heads of visitors — the first system of its kind anywhere in the world.
3400 West Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19104, United States
Open daily, generally 9:30 AM to 5 PM with shorter winter hours and last admission an hour before closing. Timed tickets bought online are cheaper than the gate. Parking is charged separately. Closed on a small number of major holidays.
