Philbrook Museum of Art

Art Museum In The 1927 Villa Philbrook; Gift Of Waite And Genevieve Phillips · Tulsa, Oklahoma

A 1927 Italian Renaissance-style villa of 72 rooms in midtown Tulsa, built for the oil man Waite Phillips and his wife Genevieve and given to the city as an art museum in 1938, only eleven years after it was finished. Twenty-five acres of formal gardens step down from the house to a tempietto above a reflecting pool, with a creek, sculpture and wooded walks below. Inside are collections of European and American painting, Italian Renaissance work, Native American art and baskets, and modern and contemporary galleries, with a second site, Philbrook Downtown, showing changing exhibitions in the Brady Arts District. Friday evening opening until 9 PM turns the gardens into an event space, and the Christmas and summer garden programmes are Tulsa fixtures.
