Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Conservatory · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A Victorian glasshouse of 1893 in Schenley Park, given to Pittsburgh by the steel magnate Henry Phipps and still one of the largest of its kind in the United States — fourteen linked rooms under glass running from a palm court to an orchid room, a desert room and a Japanese courtyard garden. What makes it unusual now is what has been built around it: a welcome centre, a production greenhouse and a research building that are among the most aggressively sustainable structures in the country, so a nineteenth-century glasshouse sits inside a twenty-first-century argument about how buildings should work.
