Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, off the south-west coast near the Cambodian border, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2006. It is a resort island of white beaches, pepper farms, pearl farms, fish-sauce (nuoc mam) factories and a national park that covers much of the forested north. Most visitors fly from Ho Chi Minh City (45-60 minutes) or Hanoi (about 2 hours), or take a ferry from Rach Gia or Ha Tien. Long Beach and Duong Dong town hold the night market and seafood, Sao Beach and Khem Beach in the south have soft white sand, and the Hon Thom cable car crosses the sea for over 7 km. It is developing fast: construction, theme parks like VinWonders, the built Sunset Town and power cuts in places. Rainy season is June to October; November to March is dry and best. Book flights early for the peak months, hire a scooter only with a licence, and confirm every ticket price before you pay. Expect crowds at Sao Beach and the night market, and power cuts in some districts.
