Picacho Peak State Park
Arizona State Park; Picacho Pass Battle Site · Picacho, Arizona
A state park around the 3,374-foot volcanic spire of Picacho Peak, a landmark beside Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson. In April 1862 Union cavalry and Confederate pickets fought a small skirmish at Picacho Pass here, often described as the westernmost battle of the Civil War, and the park hosts a re-enactment each March (check). The Hunter Trail climbs about 2 miles to the summit, using steel cables bolted into the rock on the steepest sections; it is a real scramble and is not recommended in summer heat. In late February and March, after wet winters, Mexican gold poppies and lupines can cover the lower slopes. The campground is a popular winter stop. Trails close from sunset to sunrise.

Park open daily; trails close from sunset to sunrise. Hours may be reduced in summer, when the Hunter Trail is not recommended (check). Check azstateparks.com/picacho.
