Pico de Tancitaro is the highest mountain in Michoacan, about 3,840 m, an extinct volcano rising above the avocado orchards west of Uruapan. The surrounding national park holds pine and fir forest, cold air, and a summit that gives long views over the avocado belt when the cloud lifts. Climbs start from villages near Tancitaro or Periban, along long approach roads, and local guides are recommended because the trails are poorly marked and the weather turns fast. It suits fit hikers and mountain lovers who want an uncommon summit away from the usual tourist trail. It is worth the detour for the climb and the quiet; it is not worth it for casual sightseers, in bad weather, or without a guide. Check current Michoacan travel advice and local conditions before you go, drive by day and arrange the climb through a local contact. Nights are cold at altitude, so pack real warm layers and food for a full day.

The mountain is open all year, but there is no fixed schedule and no staffed gate on most routes. A ranger post or village office may collect a small fee on some days only, so confirm locally. Start climbs at first light, usually before about 7 am, so you can return before afternoon cloud and storms, and do not plan to be on the summit after midday. The park is CLOSED to casual entry after dark in practice, and night driving on the approach roads is not advised. Walking the trails is FREE apart from any local entry or guide payment. Wet months can make the upper route unsafe.
