Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery

Around twenty-five thousand northern elephant seals use this stretch of sand five miles north of Hearst Castle, and a boardwalk runs along the bluff a few metres above them. Bulls reach five thousand pounds and fight in the surf; pups are born in their thousands each winter. It is free, needs no booking, and is one of the great wildlife spectacles in North America.
