Pikes Peak State Park

Subnational Park · McGregor, Iowa

Nine hundred and sixty acres on the bluffs of Clayton County above McGregor, with a five-hundred-foot overlook across the Upper Mississippi to the point where the Wisconsin River joins it. It is the classic view of the upper river — the one on the postcards of the Driftless country — and it is reached by a short walk from a car park rather than a climb. It shares a name with the Colorado mountain and has nothing to do with it.

Pikes Peak State Park, McGregor, Iowa, United States

FREE for day use, including parking, as at every Iowa state park, and open year round in daylight. ⚠ THE MAIN OVERLOOK IS A SHORT, LARGELY LEVEL WALK FROM THE CAR PARK — the five-hundred-foot view over the Upper Mississippi and the mouth of the Wisconsin River does not require a climb, which is unusual for a bluff of this height. The trails below the overlook are steep with stairs and uneven ground, and the ascent back is the strenuous part. Camping is booked through the Iowa DNR reservation system and the campground fills for October weekends, which is also the best time to be here. ⚠ THIS IS NOT THE COLORADO PIKES PEAK — same name, no mountain, and visitors do arrive confused. ⚠ NO POSTCODE IS RECORDED: the park has no street address and OpenStreetMap returns none.
