Pilot Mountain State Park

Subnational Park · Pinnacle, North Carolina

A quartzite monadnock standing 1,400 feet above the Piedmont floor with a bare rock knob on top, visible for forty miles in every direction and used as a landmark by the Saura people and then by every traveller since - which is how it got its name. A paved road runs almost to the summit. It is a National Natural Landmark, and to a certain generation it is Mount Pilot, from The Andy Griffith Show.
