Pingjiang Road (Suzhou)

Best Preserved Historic Canal Street Of Suzhou Old Town, Associated With The Grand Canal World Heritage Site · Suzhou, Jiangsu

The best-preserved historic street in Suzhou, running for about a kilometre and a half beside a canal in the northeast of the old town, and laid out on the same grid shown on a stone city map carved in 1229. Whitewashed houses with black-tiled roofs line one bank, willows and stone landing steps the other, and small arched bridges cross to a lattice of side lanes where residents still hang washing over the water and elderly neighbours sit out in the evening. The street has been carefully restored rather than rebuilt, and behind its doorways are tea houses, bookshops, silk and embroidery workshops, small museums and courtyard guesthouses, along with the Kunqu Opera Museum and the Pingtan Museum, where Suzhou's soft-spoken storytelling and ballad traditions - both recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage - are performed in intimate halls. A short walk away lie the Couple's Garden Retreat, one of the classical gardens on the World Heritage list, and the Humble Administrator's Garden and Lion Grove. Come early in the morning to see the canal quarter as a neighbourhood, and again after dark, when lanterns light the water and boats slip past.
