A Neurologist'S Private Collection Of Contemporary Philippine Art, In White Gardens On A Ridge Above Manila · Antipolo, Rizal

PINTO IS A PRIVATE COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE ART, BUILT BY A NEUROLOGIST, SPREAD THROUGH WHITE MEDITERRANEAN-STYLE PAVILIONS AND GARDENS ON A RIDGE AT ANTIPOLO ABOVE MANILA. DR JOVEN CUANANG BOUGHT THE WORK OF ARTISTS HE BELIEVED IN OVER DECADES, many of them young and unsold at the time, and the result is one of the most significant holdings of contemporary Philippine art anywhere - painting, sculpture and installation, much of it political, hung in rooms that open onto courtyards and gardens. BE HONEST ABOUT WHAT ELSE IT IS: IT IS ALSO A PHOTOGRAPH DESTINATION, and a large share of visitors come for the white arches and the greenery rather than the art, which irritates some people and is also part of why a private museum this good can survive. IT IS AN HOUR FROM MANILA AND CONSIDERABLY MORE IN TRAFFIC. It is closed on Mondays, near empty on a weekday morning and queued at the gate on a Saturday, and the movement between pavilions is outdoors, so rain changes the visit.

PINTO IS IN ANTIPOLO, RIZAL, about AN HOUR FROM MANILA WITHOUT TRAFFIC AND CONSIDERABLY MORE WITH IT - the climb up the ridge is the last part and is best done by car or ride-hail rather than public transport. IT KEEPS DAYTIME HOURS WITH AN ENTRANCE FEE AND IS CLOSED ON MONDAYS. THE SITE IS SEVERAL BUILDINGS AND GARDENS ON A SLOPE, walked between in the open, so RAIN AFFECTS THE VISIT. PHOTOGRAPHY IS PERMITTED and is a large part of why people come; TRIPODS AND COMMERCIAL SHOOTS NEED PERMISSION. THERE IS A CAFE ON SITE. IT IS BUSIEST AT WEEKENDS and the queue at the gate can be long; weekday mornings are near empty. ANTIPOLO ITSELF IS A PILGRIMAGE TOWN and is packed in May.
