Pioneer Park, Fairbanks

Fairbanks North Star Borough Park · Fairbanks, Alaska

A free historic theme park in Fairbanks, opened in 1967 for the Alaska Centennial Exposition marking 100 years since the Alaska Purchase. Its Gold Rush Town is a street of relocated early Fairbanks cabins and buildings, including Judge James Wickersham's house, now filled with shops and small exhibits. The centrepiece is the SS Nenana, a sternwheeler that carried passengers and freight on the rivers of Interior Alaska from 1933 to 1954 and is billed as the second-largest wooden-hulled vessel still in existence. The Pioneer Air Museum tells the story of Alaska's bush pilots, a small railway museum and train ride circle the grounds, and in summer the Alaska Salmon Bake serves dinner 5-9 PM before the Palace Theatre's nightly 8:15 PM show. The park is open daily 6 AM-midnight, and most museums and rides run from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
