Pioneer Square
Historic District · Seattle, Washington
Seattle's original downtown, settled in 1852, burned to the ground in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 and rebuilt within about eighteen months in Richardsonian Romanesque brick and stone - which is why the neighbourhood is architecturally of one piece in a way almost nothing else in the city is. The rebuild also raised the streets a full storey above the old ground level, leaving the original shopfronts buried underneath, and those are what the Underground Tour walks through.
First Avenue South at Yesler Way, Seattle, Washington, 98104, United States
A working neighbourhood, open at all hours and free to walk. Galleries and shops generally run 11 AM to 6 PM and many close on Mondays. The Underground Tour, the Klondike Gold Rush museum and Smith Tower each keep their own hours and are separately operated. The district is busiest and least pleasant on stadium event days.
