Pioneers Park Nature Center
City Nature Centre And Prairie (Lincoln Parks And Recreation) With Bison And Elk; Free · Lincoln, Nebraska
Pioneers Park Nature Center is a free nature centre on the western edge of Lincoln, inside the city's large Pioneers Park and run by Lincoln Parks and Recreation. Dating from the 1960s, it protects restored tallgrass prairie, creekside woodland and small wetlands, crossed by what is usually described as roughly 8 miles of mown and wood-chip trails. Its best-known residents are a small herd of bison and a few elk in fenced pastures near the entrance, while white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and hawks roam freely. Two buildings, usually named as the Chet Ager Building and the Prairie Building (check), hold live animal displays, exhibits on Nebraska wildlife and staff who run classes and school programmes. Around it, Pioneers Park adds a golf course, the Pinewood Bowl outdoor amphitheatre, picnic groves and 1930s sculptures such as the mounted figure called Smoke Signal. It is a local family outing rather than a destination: come for an easy prairie walk and a look at the bison, and pair it with Lincoln's museums or the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center south-west of town.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the trails and outdoor animal viewing are open every day from around dawn to dusk, and the exhibit buildings keep staffed daytime hours, roughly 8:30 am to 5 pm on weekdays and Saturdays with shorter Sunday afternoon hours, closed on some holidays; the Prairie Building may keep more limited hours. The traps that ruin a visit are arriving late on a Sunday or holiday to locked buildings, coming at midday in summer when the bison are lying down far off, and walking the low trails right after heavy rain. Confirm current hours before relying on them.
