Lodz Grew From A Village To Poland'S Cotton Capital In The 1800s; The Old Mills Now House Manufaktura, A Shopping And Culture Complex, And The Film School That Trained Polanski And Wajda · Lodz, Lodz

Piotrkowska is the main street of Lodz, a pedestrian boulevard about 4.2 km long that runs through the middle of the city. Lodz boomed in the 1800s as a textile town, and the mill owners built grand palaces, villas and tenements along this street. Many are restored, many are still peeling, and the mix is the point. Manufaktura, a former cotton mill turned shopping and museum complex, closes the northern end. Street art and large murals fill the side courtyards, and a Walk of Fame of film stars is set in the paving, a nod to the Lodz film school. The Poznanski palace holds the Central Museum of Textiles nearby. The city also holds the memory of the Lodz Ghetto, the second largest in occupied Poland, and its sites lie a short walk or tram ride from the street. It suits people who like a living, faded city more than a polished old town. If you want a postcard centre, Krakow is better. Lodz is about 1.5 hours by train from Warsaw.
