Pipe Spring National Monument

National Monument — Within The Kaibab Paiute Reservation · Fredonia, Arizona

A desert spring on the Arizona Strip, within the Kaibab Paiute Reservation, that has drawn people for centuries — Ancestral Puebloans, the Kaibab Paiute, and from the 1860s Latter-day Saint ranchers, who built a fortified stone ranch house called Winsor Castle directly over the spring in 1870-1872 to run the church's tithing cattle. Arizona's first telegraph office operated inside it. Rangers lead tours of the fort, and the museum is shared with the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, telling both stories side by side. It is on Arizona time, an hour behind neighbouring Utah in summer, and it makes an easy stop between Zion and the Grand Canyon North Rim.
