Pipestem Resort State Park

Four thousand acres on the rim of the Bluestone Gorge in the southern coalfields, and the only state park in West Virginia with an aerial tramway. The cable car drops around 1,100 feet into the gorge to Mountain Creek Lodge, which has no road to it and can be reached no other way. The park is named for the hollow-stemmed shrub that grows here, which local people used to make pipe stems.

Park open year round, free. THE AERIAL TRAM IS SEASONAL, generally late spring through autumn, and does not operate in high wind — check before travelling. Lodges, cabins and camping operate year round or seasonally depending on the facility.
