Pipestone National Monument
National Monument · Pipestone, Minnesota
A deeply sacred 282-acre site in southwestern Minnesota preserving active quarries of red pipestone (catlinite). For over 3,000 years, Native Americans from across the continent have journeyed here to quarry the stone used to carve ceremonial pipes. Today, affiliated tribal members still hand-quarry the stone. The park features a scenic paved trail through tallgrass prairie, past quartzite cliffs, and Winnewissa Falls.
