Pisew Falls Provincial Park

Manitoba Provincial Park On The Grass River; Pisew Falls Drops About 13 Metres And Is The Most Accessible Large Waterfall In The Province, With A Boardwalk From The Highway Car Park · Thompson, Manitoba

Between Winnipeg and Thompson there are seven hundred kilometres of Highway 6 with very little on it, and Pisew Falls is the reason to stop. The Grass River drops about thirteen metres over a rock lip into a boil of white water, and a boardwalk runs from the car park to two viewing platforms above it - a few minutes' walk, and you are looking straight down at the falls with the spray coming up at you. The Cree name pisew is usually translated as lynx, said to be for the hissing sound of the water. For the more determined there is a suspension bridge over the river and a trail of about twenty-two kilometres return to KWASITCHEWAN FALLS, which is the HIGHEST WATERFALL IN MANITOBA at roughly fourteen metres and sees a tiny fraction of the visitors. In winter the whole thing freezes into ice columns and the boardwalk becomes a different and far more dangerous walk.

Provincial Road 6 / Highway 6, south of Thompson, northern Manitoba, Thompson, Manitoba, Canada

THE PARK IS OPEN YEAR-ROUND WITH NO ADMISSION FEE, and the car park is directly off Highway 6. FACILITIES ARE SEASONAL: washrooms, the campground and maintained boardwalk conditions run roughly MID-MAY TO EARLY SEPTEMBER, and in winter the boardwalk and stairs are unmaintained, icy and genuinely hazardous - the falls in ice are worth seeing and the walk to see them is not a casual one. THE FALLS ARE AT THEIR HEAVIEST IN LATE MAY AND JUNE on the melt. THE KWASITCHEWAN FALLS TRAIL is about 22km return over rough backcountry ground and should be treated as a full-day or overnight undertaking, not an extension of the boardwalk. Thompson is about 70km north and is the nearest full services; Highway 6 is paved and maintained all year but the gaps between fuel stops are long.
