Pisgah National Forest
National Forest · Asheville, North Carolina
More than five hundred thousand acres of the southern Appalachians west and north of Asheville, and one of the first national forests in the eastern United States - much of it bought from the Biltmore Estate, which is why American forestry as a profession effectively began inside this boundary. It holds Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, the Cradle of Forestry, Mount Mitchell's surrounding slopes, Linville Gorge and the Shining Rock and Middle Prong wildernesses.
