Playa Ancon and the Trinidad Coast
The Best Beach On Cuba'S Southern Coast, Twelve Kilometres From Trinidad, With A Reef Key Offshore And The Village Beach The Town Itself Uses · Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus
Trinidad is a colonial town in the hills and people stay a week in it, so sooner or later everyone goes down to the sea. Twelve kilometres south, a peninsula runs out into the Caribbean and Playa Ancon lies along it: a long curve of white sand and warm shallow water, usually called the best beach on Cuba's whole southern coast, with three dated hotels and not much else. Closer to town, Playa La Boca is where Trinidad itself goes - free, pebblier, a village with paladares and no hotels at all - and Playa Maria Aguilar sits between the two. Offshore is Cayo Blanco, a reef key with a black coral wall, reached on the catamaran day trip that half the town books. The sandflies at dusk are genuinely notorious, and repellent before five o'clock rather than after is the single most useful thing anyone can tell you about this peninsula. Almost everybody stays in Trinidad and comes down for the day, which is the right way round: the hotels here are dated and isolated, and the town twelve kilometres inland is the reason to be in this province at all.

Diving is arranged at the marina and depends on boats and fuel. Twelve kilometres from Trinidad by taxi or bicycle.
