A Long, Wide Gulf Beach And Fishing Village Near The Mouth Of The Rio Grande, The Main Weekend And Holiday Beach Of Matamoros And The Rio Grande Valley, With Seafood Palapas, Dunes And A Lighthouse Nearby. Brown Water From The River, Hot And Windy, Packed At Easter And Quiet Otherwise · Matamoros, Tamaulipas

Playa Bagdad is a long, open Gulf of Mexico beach at the mouth of the Rio Grande, called the Rio Bravo in Mexico, about 40 km east of Matamoros in Tamaulipas. Across the river lies Brownsville, Texas, which is why border families have visited for generations. The sand is fine and grey-brown, the water is brown from river silt, and wind and waves are strong. Palapa restaurants line the shore and serve fried fish, shrimp and cold drinks, and at Easter many thousands of people from Matamoros and the Valley arrive for the holiday. It suits local families, anglers and travellers who want to see a real Mexican border beach, and it is worth the drive for seafood on a quiet weekday. It is not a clear-water swimming beach, and it is not worth the trip for anyone who wants resort comforts or calm surf. Rip currents are real and there are no lifeguards. Seafood is the reason to come, not the swim. Check current Tamaulipas travel advice before you go and drive by day.

The beach is open at all hours and walking on it is FREE, but visiting after dark is not advised. Palapa restaurants usually open from late morning to early evening, busiest on weekends and at Easter, and many are CLOSED on weekdays in the low season or in bad weather. Any parking fee is paid to the palapa owner and is commonly small. There are no fixed hours for the shore, and conditions change with wind and tide. Confirm current opening locally, since stalls come and go.
