Pocahontas State Park

Virginia State Park; The Largest In The System At About 8,000 Acres, Built By The Civilian Conservation Corps And Home To The Only CCC Museum On A Corps Built Site · Chesterfield, Virginia

Eight thousand acres of pine and hardwood in Chesterfield County, twenty minutes from downtown Richmond, and the largest state park in Virginia. It began as a New Deal demonstration area - the Civilian Conservation Corps built the dams, the lakes and the original buildings in the 1930s, and the CCC Museum here is the only one in the country dedicated to the Corps on a site the Corps actually built. What it has become is the busiest outdoor space in the Richmond metro: an aquatic centre with pools and slides that is genuinely a destination in its own right, an amphitheatre that hosts a summer concert series, a campground, cabins, three lakes, and sixty-odd miles of trail. The mountain biking is the part that surprises people - the trail network here is extensive, well built and good enough that riders drive across the state for it, which is not something anyone expects of a flat Piedmont park. Beaver Lake and Swift Creek Lake take the paddlers, and the whole thing is far quieter on a weekday than its size and its numbers suggest.

Amphitheatre concerts run a summer series with tickets sold separately.
