Pocono Mountains

Resort Area · Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

A twenty-four-hundred-square-mile plateau in north-eastern Pennsylvania that has been the nearest mountains to New York and Philadelphia for a hundred and fifty years, and has built an entire resort economy on that fact. It invented the American honeymoon resort — the heart-shaped bath and the seven-foot champagne-glass whirlpool were both dreamed up here in the 1960s and 70s and became a national shorthand — and it has since become a region of ski hills, enormous indoor water parks, lakes and state forest. It is not wilderness and does not pretend to be; it is the mountains that a very large number of Americans mean when they say they are going to the mountains.
