Point Defiance Park
City Park · Tacoma, Washington
A 760-acre headland park at the northern tip of Tacoma, set aside in 1888 and one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Most of it is old-growth forest - Douglas fir and western red cedar that have never been logged, which is extraordinary inside a city - wrapped by Five Mile Drive along the bluff. It also contains a zoo and aquarium, a rose garden, a reconstructed Hudson's Bay Company fort and a working ferry dock, all separately run.
5400 North Pearl Street, Tacoma, Washington, 98407, United States
Park open daily from dawn to dusk, free. Five Mile Drive has vehicle hours and is CLOSED TO CARS UNTIL MID-MORNING ON SATURDAYS AND ALL DAY ON SOME SUMMER MORNINGS so that walkers and cyclists have it - check the posted schedule, because it is the best time to use it. The zoo, the gardens and Fort Nisqually inside the park keep their own hours and the zoo is separately ticketed.
