Point Dume State Beach
State Park · Malibu, California
Point Dume State Beach is at the western end of Malibu, reached by Westward Beach Road off Pacific Coast Highway. The headland is a tall volcanic bluff that drops to the sea, with Westward Beach, a wide sandy crescent, curving away on its north side and rocky coves and tide pools to the south. A trail and steps lead up the bluff - confirm the route - to a summit lookout with long views along the coast and, on clear days, out to Catalina. In winter the point is one of the best places near Los Angeles to watch gray whales pass, usually between December and April - confirm. The cliffs and cove have appeared in many films. Be honest about the limits: the shorebreak is heavy and can injure swimmers, the rocks are slippery, the bluff edge is unstable, the lot charges a fee - confirm - and summer weekends are crowded. Plan two to three hours, and check the tide table and the surf report before you leave home.

The state beach is normally open daily from about 8 AM to sunset, and the lot and restrooms follow the same daylight schedule - confirm the current times with California State Parks. A pay station or kiosk collects the day-use parking fee at Westward Beach, and fees at Malibu state beaches commonly run USD 10-20 a vehicle; confirm the amount today. A few free or time-limited spaces exist near the bluff top on the residential street, with strict signs and rules. Parts of the bluff trail or cove access can close for erosion, nesting birds or storm damage, and the lot can close for high surf or filming. High tide cuts off the rocky end of the beach, so check a tide table before you go.
