Point Lookout State Park

Maryland State Park · Scotland, Maryland

The southern tip of Maryland's western shore, where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake, and the site of Camp Hoffman — the largest Union prison camp of the Civil War. Built for ten thousand men, it held roughly twice that, and somewhere between three and four thousand Confederate prisoners died here of disease, exposure and hunger. Today it is a beach, a campground and a fishing pier with a lighthouse of 1830 at the point, and the contrast between what it is and what happened here is the whole experience.
