Point Mugu State Park
State Park · Malibu, California
Point Mugu State Park lies in Ventura County along Highway 1, where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the Pacific. It covers many thousands of acres and has miles of coastline, with a beach on one side of the highway and rugged canyons and ridges on the other. Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon cut inland through chaparral and oak, Mugu Peak rises above the shore, and the highway itself passes through a cut at Mugu Rock - confirm the details. The Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu sits next door, so you may hear aircraft. People come to hike, mountain bike, camp and fish the surf. Fog, wind and cold water shape the coast, and the 2018 Woolsey fire burned much of the park, so recovery and closures matter. Poison oak, ticks and rattlesnakes are part of the trails. Confirm which routes and campgrounds are open before you drive out, and expect a day-use fee at the entrances. It suits a full day outdoors.

California State Parks has generally opened the park for day use from about morning until sunset, with a staffed kiosk at the main entrances at the beach and the canyon trailheads, but the exact opening and closing times change by season and by entrance - confirm them on the State Parks page before you go. Campgrounds follow their own check-in and quiet hours, and the beach campground at the coast usually needs a reservation made well ahead in summer. Trails and fire roads can close after storms or during fire recovery, red-flag wildfire weather can shut the backcountry entirely, and Highway 1 can close after landslides or heavy surf. Gates are locked at night, so do not leave a car inside after closing.
