Pololū Valley
Valley · Niulii, Hawaii
The northernmost of a series of erosional valleys forming the east coast of Kohala Mountain on Hawaii Island, at the end of the Akoni Pule Highway. The word pololū means long spear in Hawaiian. The lookout at the road's end gives a view down a chain of green cliffs running south, and a steep rough trail drops about four hundred feet to a black sand beach at the valley mouth, where the surf is powerful and there is no lifeguard.

The lookout is open in daylight and is FREE. ⚠ THE TRAIL DOWN INTO THE VALLEY IS STEEP, ROUGH AND FREQUENTLY MUDDY, and it has been closed at times for erosion and safety work - check before relying on it. The car park at the lookout is very small and fills early. There are no facilities beyond a bin, and no water.
