Pond Inlet, Mittimatalik in Inuktitut, is an Inuit hamlet of about 1,600 people on the north coast of Baffin Island, facing the glaciated peaks of Bylot Island across Eclipse Sound. It is the usual gateway to Sirmilik National Park, to the spring floe edge and to summer narwhal viewing, and it is reached only by scheduled flight, normally from Iqaluit. Be plain with yourself: this is a small working community, not a sightseeing town. There is no old quarter, no tour desk on the main road and no fixed programme. Visitors arrange boat and snowmobile trips through local outfitters and the Hunters and Trappers Organization, and the best weeks are short and depend on ice. A co-op store, a small hotel or guest house and a local heritage centre, possibly called Nattinak (confirm), are the town's visitor services. The scenery is among the grandest in the Canadian Arctic, and it rewards people who plan months ahead.

Pond Inlet keeps no visiting hours because it is a living community. The co-op store, the hotel and any heritage centre keep their own hours, commonly a weekday pattern of roughly 9 to 5 with shorter days on weekends - confirm by phone. Floe-edge trips run roughly April to June while the sea ice holds, and open-water boat trips run roughly July to September. Winter is dark, cold and quiet with few services for visitors. Walking the town and the shore is free at any hour, and the midnight sun lasts from about May to early August. Sundays and holidays are quiet.
