A Parks Canada National Historic Site Covering Burial Grounds Of Maritime Archaic Indians From About 4,000 To 5,000 Years Ago And Later Groswater And Dorset Palaeo Inuit Sites, With A Visitor Centre And Coastal Trails On Limestone Barrens Known For Rare Plants. The Site Sits On The Viking Trail Towards L'Anse Aux Meadows. · Port au Choix, Newfoundland and Labrador

Port au Choix National Historic Site is a Parks Canada site on the Port au Choix Peninsula of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula, about 200 km north of Gros Morne. It protects a landscape where Maritime Archaic people buried their dead some 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, and where later Groswater and Dorset Palaeo-Inuit peoples lived. The burial grounds are not open to visit and nothing is being dug for the public; what you see is the visitor centre, its displays and the coastal trails over limestone barrens with unusual plants. The site sits on the Viking Trail towards L'Anse aux Meadows. It is remote, with few services, and black flies can be fierce in early summer. It suits history and archaeology fans and Viking Trail drivers, and it is a poor choice for anyone expecting ruins. Allow two to three hours. The visitor centre is seasonal, so confirm dates before you go. Come in September if you can, when the insects have faded and the light is clear, and bring food, since choices in town are thin.

Archaeological landscape and visitor centre on the Port au Choix Peninsula on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, about 200 km north of Gros Morne, with coastal trails and a lighthouse, Port au Choix, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

The Parks Canada visitor centre is seasonal, normally open from about June to September or early October, with daily hours that are shorter at the shoulders of the season, so confirm before you travel. The coastal trails and the lighthouse area are outdoor and can be walked at any time in daylight, though weather, snow and wind make them hard from late autumn to spring. The burial grounds are protected and closed to visitors at all times. Guided or interpretive programmes, if offered, depend on staffing. Outside the visitor-centre season the area is very quiet, services in the town are limited and the roads can be icy, so plan carefully.
