Port Crescent State Park
Michigan State Park · Port Austin, Michigan
Port Crescent State Park lies on Saginaw Bay, the Lake Huron side of the Thumb, a few miles southwest of Port Austin. Its main draw is about 3 miles of sand beach, backed by dunes and woods, with shallow, warmer water than you find on Lake Michigan. The Pinnebog River reaches the bay at the park, boardwalks cross the dune and marsh areas, and the park is a designated dark-sky preserve (confirm), so clear nights show many stars. Sunsets over the bay are a highlight, and the campground fills early in summer. It suits families, campers and stargazers, and it is easy to reach by road. The beach is long but can feel busy on hot weekends, and mosquitoes are common in the marshy areas. Allow half a day for the beach, a boardwalk walk and lunch, or a full day if you stay for sunset and the stars. A Recreation Passport is needed for the vehicle. Port Austin village and Lake Huron lighthouses are nearby.

The park is generally open daily through the year, commonly from early morning until late evening for day use, and the dark-sky area is intended to be enjoyed after dark, though the exact access rules and any gate hours should be confirmed. The campground operates in the warm season with a few sites sometimes open longer, and summer weekends book out well in advance. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for the vehicle. In winter the beach and trails are quiet and sometimes icy or snowy, and services are limited. Check with the park office before a long drive for current hours and boardwalk conditions.
