Port Douglas and the Daintree Coast

A Resort Town An Hour North Of Cairns Where The Great Barrier Reef'S Outer Edge Is A Shorter Boat Ride Than Anywhere Else On The Coast, And The Daintree Rainforest And River Begin A Few Minutes North Across The Ferry Crossing · Port Douglas, Queensland

Port Douglas is a low-rise resort town an hour north of Cairns on the Coral Sea coast, built around a single main street, Macrossan Street, running down to Four Mile Beach and the marina. It is the easiest base on this stretch of coast for a day on the inner reef: the Low Isles and the Agincourt ribbon reefs are a shorter run from here than from Cairns, though the reef's outer edge is a longer trip again and belongs to a separate day out. The town itself is small and walkable, with Sunday markets, a slow pace built around a few relaxed days rather than a long stay, and St Mary's by the Sea, the small chapel by the water where weddings happen most weekends. North of town the Daintree River is crossed by a short car ferry rather than a bridge, and that crossing alone, with crocodiles genuinely present in the water, is worth doing before the rainforest beyond it even starts. Port Douglas works best as reef by day and a quiet marina evening, not as a single stop on a bigger loop.

On the Coral Sea coast an hour north of Cairns, with the Daintree River and rainforest beginning a short ferry crossing to the north, Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia

Port Douglas has no single opening hours: Macrossan Street's shops and restaurants run through the day and into the evening, the Sunday markets at Anzac Park run only on Sunday mornings and nothing replaces them midweek, and reef boats leave the marina early, usually between 7 and 8am, for day trips that return mid-afternoon. The Daintree River ferry runs continuously through daylight hours and stops overnight, so a late return from the north side needs checking in advance. Four Mile Beach has no fixed hours, but stinger season, roughly November to May, closes ordinary swimming outside the netted enclosure. Cairns airport is about an hour south by road or shuttle, and there is no rail link along this coast.
