Port Hope

A Town With One Of The Best Preserved 19th Century Main Streets In Ontario, A Historic Town Hall, A Long Main Street Of Heritage Shops And Cafes, A Lakeside Beach, A Salmon Run On The Ganaraska River And A Wide Range Of Festivals. A Heritage Stop On The Lake Ontario Shore · Port Hope, Ontario

Port Hope is a heritage town of roughly 17,000 people on Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Ganaraska River, about 100 km east of Toronto. Its centre holds one of the best-preserved 19th-century commercial streets in Ontario, a district of brick and stone shopfronts, cornices and tall upper windows, built when the harbour shipped grain and lumber to the world (confirm the district designation). The Ganaraska River runs through the middle of town, and in autumn Chinook and coho salmon climb it past the Corbett Dam to spawn, drawing anglers and onlookers to the banks (confirm timing). The restored Capitol Theatre, the old town hall, quiet residential streets of Georgian and Gothic houses and a lakeside beach round out the visit. Antique shops, bookshops, galleries and cafes fill the old buildings, and festivals bring music and food to the street through the year. It makes a relaxed day or weekend from Toronto, and rooms are limited, so book ahead for summer and for the salmon weeks.

The town and its main street are open all year, and walking Walton Street, the river banks and the lakefront costs nothing at any hour. Shops usually keep hours of about 10 to 5, with shorter hours on Sunday and Monday - confirm, since many are owner-run. The Capitol Theatre lists film and live shows by evening and weekend (confirm the programme). Salmon viewing at the dam is seasonal, usually from about mid September to late October, with the busiest days on weekends. The beach and the harbour are best from late May to early September. Winter is quiet, with shorter shop hours and some closures.
