Portland Japanese Garden

Japanese Garden · Portland, Oregon

Twelve and a half acres on a hillside in Washington Park, laid out from 1963 by Takuma Tono of Tokyo Agricultural University on the site of a former zoo, and widely held to be among the most authentic Japanese gardens outside Japan - a former Japanese ambassador to the United States said as much in public and the phrase has followed it ever since. It is five distinct garden styles in one place, with a Kengo Kuma cultural village added in 2017.

611 Southwest Kingston Avenue, Portland, Oregon, 97205, United States

Open most of the year with reduced winter hours and closure on some days; check the current schedule. ⚠ ENTRY IS BY TIMED TICKET BOOKED ONLINE AND THE GARDEN SELLS OUT, particularly during the late-November maple season and on fine spring weekends - this is not a walk-up attraction. A moderate admission applies with reductions; members enter free and get early hours. The garden's own car park is small and fills by mid-morning; an accessible shuttle runs from the lower Washington Park lot and is often the better arrival.
