Porto Santo
Island Of The Madeira Archipelago With A Single 9 Km Golden Sand Beach; Columbus Is Said To Have Lived Here · Vila Baleira, Madeira
Porto Santo is the small, dry sister island of Madeira, about 2.5 hours by ferry north-east of Funchal, and it exists for one thing Madeira lacks: a beach. A single strand of fine golden sand runs roughly 9 km along its south coast, backed by dunes and low hotels, with a calmer and slightly warmer sea than Madeira's rocky shores. The sand is said to have therapeutic minerals, and locals bury themselves in it for aching joints; the claim is folk wisdom rather than proven medicine. The island's other story is Columbus, who is said to have lived here and married the daughter of its first governor; the house museum in Vila Baleira tells it. Inland are bare volcanic peaks, the columnar basalt of Pico Ana Ferreira, windmills and wind-carved sandstone at Fonte da Areia. It is quiet, flat enough to cycle and walk, and cheap by island standards. The honest caveat: it is brown rather than green, windy, very quiet out of season with many places closed, and packed in August when Madeira's families come over.
